T. Vaikuntam

Thota Vaikuntam (born 1942) is an established Indian painter. His paintings capture the simple lifestyle of villagers like the paddy fields, toddy pots on shoulders of men, the household chores, temple rituals etc. Vaikuntam’s work captivates your eye with its bright colours. His strokes are strong, controlled and angular that gives his work a contemporary feel even though the subjects are very traditional. He only likes using primary colours, which he feels gives depth and are essentially Indian. Thota Vaikuntam paintings have a sense of strength, a power that flows from the charcoal or paint he uses. He has won many awards, the most important being the National Award for Painting received in 1993, and the Biennale Award from Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal in 1988-89.

Siddharth Shingade

The artist creates a personal language, populating his surfaces with tall figures that appear to be wrapped in history, with a million stories to tell. He uses mixed media and acrylic on canvas to impart textures and details to his work. From depicting the scenes of the village highlighted in deep reds, earthy browns, pistachio greens to painting in monochromes--a mastery over his method and message. His choice of palette resonates the intimate relationship he shares with his homeland, Marathwada in India.
